Togo grants 30-day visa-free access to all African citizens

Togo has announced a visa exemption for all African nationals, in a move aimed at advancing continental integration and easing the movement of people across the continent.

It joins countries like Rwanda, which has scrapped visa fees for African travellers.

In a statement issued on Monday, May 18, the country’s Minister of Security, Colonel Calixte Batossie Madjoulba, said the decision took immediate effect and applies to all citizens of African states holding valid national passports.

“The Minister of Security informs the national and international community of the decision taken by the President of the Council to grant, effective today, Monday, May 18, 2026, visa exemptions for entry into Togo to all nationals of African states holding a valid national passport,” the statement reads.

According to the statement, the measure reflects the government’s commitment to promoting African integration, strengthening the free movement of people and goods, and fostering cooperation among African states and people.

“It is part of the dynamic of openness, modernization, and attractiveness initiated by the President of the Council, with the ambition of making Togo a regional hub for services, business, culture, and people-to-people exchanges in the heart of Africa,” the statement added.

Authorities further said the decision reaffirms Togo’s commitment to Pan-African ideals, continental solidarity, and regional integration initiatives linked to mobility across Africa.

Under the new arrangement, African travelers will be allowed to enter Togo without a visa for a period not exceeding 30 days.

However, the government clarified that the exemption does not eliminate existing security, immigration, and public health requirements applicable to entry into the country.

As part of the travel procedures, visitors will still be required to complete prior immigration formalities through the government’s online platform before arrival.

“Travelers must submit their travel declaration on the platform at least twenty-four (24) hours before their arrival in order to obtain a travel document to present at border crossings,” the statement said.

The government also emphasized that the visa exemption does not override legal and regulatory provisions relating to irregular entry, illegal stay, or national security measures.

The Minister of Security instructed all relevant administrations and services to ensure the effective implementation of the measure across all land, air, and sea entry points
