President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a high-level, closed-door meeting with the nation’s Service Chiefs at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The crucial security meeting commenced at approximately 06:01pm (local time), shortly after the military high command arrived at the forecourt and were ushered into the President’s office.
This marks a significant engagement as it is President Tinubu’s first meeting with the Service Chiefs since he swore in General Christopher Musa (retd.) as the new Minister of Defence on December 4.
Although the official agenda of Monday’s meeting was not immediately made public, the engagement is taking place against a backdrop of pressing national and regional security challenges. These include the ongoing captivity of 115 students kidnapped from a Catholic boarding school
Furthermore, the meeting follows major national policy shifts aimed at addressing security lapses. On November 26, President Tinubu had declared a national security emergency and ordered fresh recruitment into security agencies. He also mandated the withdrawal of all police personnel from Very Important Persons (VIPs).
The current high-level consultation also occurs just days after Nigeria’s Senate approved President Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to the neighbouring Benin Republic following an attempted coup in that country
