Nigeria’s sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi delivered another career-defining performance on Saturday, equalling the Nigerian men’s 100 metres record with a blistering 9.84 seconds to defeat reigning world champion Oblique Seville at the London Diamond League.

Ajayi’s remarkable run saw him finish ahead of the Jamaican star, who clocked 9.87 seconds to settle for second place, while fellow Jamaican Romell Glave finished third in a personal best of 9.97 seconds.

The victory further cements Ajayi’s status as one of the world’s fastest men this season and reinforces his growing reputation ahead of the forthcoming World Athletics Championships.

Record-equalling performance

The Nigerian sprinter exploded out of the blocks and maintained his composure throughout the race to equal the national record of 9.84 seconds, matching the fastest time ever recorded by a Nigerian in the men’s 100m.

His victory over the reigning world champion marks one of the biggest achievements of his career and highlights the rapid progress he has made on the international circuit.

Ajayi entered the meeting as the reigning NCAA 100m champion and lived up to expectations with a composed and technically brilliant performance against a world-class field.

Seville settles for second

World champion Oblique Seville pushed hard over the closing metres but was unable to catch the flying Nigerian, crossing the finish line in 9.87 seconds.

Despite finishing second, Seville’s time underlined the high quality of the race, with three athletes breaking the 10-second barrier.

Romell Glave also impressed by finishing third in a lifetime best of 9.97 seconds, completing an outstanding contest featuring some of the fastest sprinters in the world.

Ajayi’s latest achievement is another significant milestone for Nigerian athletics as the country continues to produce world-class sprinters capable of competing with the very best.

His consistency throughout the season has positioned him among the leading contenders for medals at major global competitions and has raised hopes of another podium finish for Nigeria at the World Athletics Championships.

The London triumph also serves as a confidence booster as Ajayi prepares for the remainder of the international season, where expectations will continue to grow following his record-equalling run.

With victory over the reigning world champion and another national record-equalling performance, the Nigerian has once again demonstrated that he belongs among the elite sprinters in world athletics
