The inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) was officially launched at the Uyo Township Stadium on Wednesday, showcasing the beauty, charm, and rich cultural diversity of the Niger Delta region.
The event was graced by a spectacular display of splendour and grandeur, with President Bola Tinubu’s presence represented by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), who urged athletes to bring the same energy and excitement from the opening ceremony into their competition performances.
The ceremony, a star-studded gathering of dignitaries and participants from various walks of life, exceeded expectations, attracting cheers from a captivated crowd. Among the notable attendees were the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa; the representative of the Delta State Governor, Senator Emmanuel Aguarivwodo; state sports commissioners from the nine participating states; members of the National Assembly; and key officials from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), led by Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku.
The opening event set the tone for what is expected to be an exciting and competitive festival, one that will not only leave a lasting legacy for Akwa Ibom but also for the entire Niger Delta region and Nigeria. Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom led an enthusiastic crowd of over 10,000 spectators who, despite hours of heavy rain, filled the newly renovated sports facility in the heart of Uyo, which is fast becoming a central hub for sports in Nigeria.
Together, they sang and danced in the rain, celebrating the launch of a competition that is poised to become a key event for discovering future sporting stars, especially considering the Niger Delta’s rich history of producing some of Africa’s greatest sports talents.
Governor Eno expressed his unwavering commitment to the success of the festival, emphasizing that hosting the event was a key part of his administration’s efforts to promote sports and provide young people with opportunities to shine on both national and international stages.
Managing Director of the NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku highlighted that the initiative would foster unity and help harness the immense sports talents within the region
