The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to halt its planned subscription price increase pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
In a statement on Thursday, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, confirmed the directive, emphasizing that the price freeze is to protect consumers from potential exploitation.
The decision follows MultiChoice’s request for an extension regarding its scheduled appearance before the commission over concerns about recurring price hikes. While the FCCPC granted the extension, it has now rescheduled the hearing for March 6, 2025, mandating the company’s CEO and key officers to appear with a comprehensive response.
“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final determination,” the statement read.
MultiChoice had earlier announced a price adjustment effective March 1, 2025, citing the need to sustain high-quality content delivery.
However, the announcement sparked concerns among subscribers, particularly over increases in the DStv Compact package, while Compact Plus and Premium bouquets remain at N30,000 and N44,500, respectively.
