United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his “decisive leadership” in tackling security challenges across Nigeria, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to supporting the nation’s fight against terrorism.In an official letter dated July 6, President Trump praised President Tinubu’s resolve to address ongoing violence, particularly attacks targeting vulnerable and religious communities.
”It is a true honor to stand with you in the fight against these terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” President Trump wrote, noting that the bilateral relationship remains crucial amidst rising instability across West Africa.
Deepening Security Collaboration
The commendation comes on the heels of expanding defense cooperation between both nations.
Following bilateral agreements reached late last year, Abuja and Washington established a Joint Working Group co-chaired by their respective National Security Advisers.
This collaboration led to the establishment of the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, a framework focusing on intelligence sharing, tactical training, and coordinated strategic operations.
The joint effort recently achieved a major breakthrough on May 16 during a high-precision strike on ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad basin, which resulted in the neutralization of top ISIS commander Abubakar Al-Minoki alongside several key lieutenants.
Deployment of Elite Forces
Highlighting ongoing operational support, President Trump confirmed the deployment of US Special Operations Forces to train and equip the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The elite units are tasked with providing Nigerian troops with enhanced skill sets, advanced intelligence, and tactical equipment to secure the homeland.
The diplomatic momentum was further reinforced last week during a visit to Abuja by US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, who met with senior Nigerian government officials to seal further commitments on regional stability and economic partnership
