U.S. Delivers Military Equipment to Nigeria to Support Counterterrorism and Security Operations

Nigerian security forces have received new military equipment from the United States as part of efforts to tackle insurgency, banditry, and other security challenges.

The delivery, which took place in Abuja on Tuesday, January 13, was confirmed by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) via its official X account, @USAfricaCommand. The supplies are intended to support Nigeria’s security agencies in meeting ongoing operational needs amid persistent threats across parts of the country.

“This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and highlights our shared security partnership”, the U.S. Mission said in the statement.

The move comes against the backdrop of intensified U.S.–Nigeria defence cooperation, including a series of coordinated airstrikes carried out in late December 2025 against Islamic State-linked militant targets in Sokoto State. The strikes were conducted by U.S. Africa Command in coordination with Nigerian authorities as part of counterterrorism efforts to disrupt extremist networks operating in northwest Nigeria.

Both governments described the Sokoto operation as part of broader security collaboration and intelligence sharing aimed at degrading armed groups that pose a threat to civilian populations and regional stability.

Nigerian authorities reported that initial assessments indicated no civilian casualties in the strikes, though debris from the action was found in parts of Sokoto and neighbouring Kwara State
