State Police: NEC Gives FCT, Kwara, Kebbi, Adamawa One Week To Submit Report

The National Economic Council (NEC) has given the governments of Kwara, Kebbi, and Adamawa one week to submit their reports on the proposed creation of state police.

The deadline was announced by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, who briefed State House correspondents on Thursday following a meeting of the council, which was presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

According to Diri, if the states fail to present their reports within the specified timeframe, the NEC will take “appropriate decisions” regarding the matter.

The push for the creation of state police has been ongoing since February 15, when the federal government formed a committee to explore the idea.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris said that President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s governors had already agreed on the broad modalities for the establishment of state police.

Idris further emphasised that a series of meetings would take place to assess the feasibility of a decentralised police force, with discussions focused on determining the most effective way to implement the system.

In March, the NEC reported that 20 states had yet to submit their reports on the potential establishment of state police, and earlier this year, the council issued a warning that it would make decisions for any state that failed to meet the deadline.

The latest directive to Kwara, Kebbi, and Adamawa follows a similar warning issued in September, when NEC threatened to impose decisions on any state that had not complied with the request for reports
