Former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, received a remarkable gesture of goodwill during his visit to Ghana as President John Dramani Mahama offered him Ghanaian citizenship.

Joshua, who arrived in the West African nation on June 13, 2025, was warmly welcomed at the Jubilee House in Accra on June 16, where he paid a courtesy visit to President Mahama.

The British-Nigerian boxing icon was visibly moved by the reception, praising Ghana’s rich culture, warmth, and hospitality.

In a symbolic and unexpected moment during the meeting, President Mahama offered Joshua the opportunity to become a Ghanaian citizen, saying, “If you want us to give you a Ghanaian passport, we will give you.”

The gesture underlines Ghana’s growing cultural diplomacy and Joshua’s status as a global sporting figure of African heritage.

Joshua, who won Olympic gold at London 2012 and holds a professional record of 28 wins and 4 losses, is currently gearing up for his next bout. Potential opponents being considered include rising star Moses Itauma, American heavyweight Jared Anderson, or long-time rival Deontay Wilder.

His visit to Ghana has been met with excitement across the country, with fans and sports stakeholders hailing the moment as a boost for African unity through sports.

The citizenship offer, if accepted, would mark another significant chapter in Joshua’s storied career and further strengthen ties between Ghana and the African diaspora
