The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has announced the implementation of the taxpayer identification (tax ID) system.

In a statement on Monday, the agencies said the development is in line with Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandate every taxable person in Nigeria to obtain a tax ID.

According to the agencies, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen tax administration, enhance transparency, and improve service delivery across the nation’s tax system.

“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the statement reads.

“It is designed to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and ensure more efficient management of tax-related information.”

Among its key benefits are a single tax identity for all tax transactions and engagements, simplified registration and payment processes, improved visibility and tracking of taxpayer records, reduced tax leakages, and harmonisation of taxpayer information across all levels of government.

The agencies also announced that the new tax ID system will replace the existing tax identification number (TIN) validation API currently used by ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organisations.

“Accordingly, all organizations requiring integration or validation services related to Tax ID for individuals enterprises and business names are advised to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB [email protected], while integration or validation services related to TaxID for corporate entities are advised to contact the Tax Automation Department of the NS [email protected] for access to the Tax ID API and related integration guidelines,” the statement added.

On December 29, 2025, JRB announced that the Nigerian tax identification portal will go live nationwide on January 1, 2026, as part of efforts to modernise tax administration.

According to the JRB, the tax identification is a unique, system-generated number assigned to all taxable persons in Nigeria strictly for tax administration purposes.

The board said the tax ID will be linked to the national identification number for individuals and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number for businesses and organisations.
