Wike Nyesom Wike has dismissed claims that there is overwhelming public support for the re-election of Siminalayi Fubara in 2027. Speaking during his monthly media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike described suggestions that Rivers residents are unanimously backing Fubara for a second term as misleading.
The former Rivers governor also addressed the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, referencing the intervention of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the dispute between the governor and the State House of Assembly. According to Wike, the Assembly complied with the President’s peace effort by withdrawing impeachment proceedings against Fubara, but he alleged that the governor later failed to fully respect the terms of the agreement reached during the reconciliation process.
“The President intervened in the impeachment proceeding. I said withdraw, let there be peace… The Assembly went and withdrew the impeachment,” Wike said, while accusing the governor of becoming “too smart” regarding the understanding reached before the President. Wike also criticised claims that Rivers residents are pressuring Fubara to seek re-election, insisting that such narratives do not reflect the true political situation in the state.
“The President, intervened in the impeachment proceeding. I said withdraw, let there be peace. And the governor said, look, I’m ready for peace. Look, I’m no longer interested for this. I will not do this. The Assembly went and withdrew the impeachment,” Wike explained. “Having withdrawn the impeachment, he is now too smart on what you agreed before the President. It’s like when you go on arbitration.” Wike was particularly critical of the idea that the governor is being pressured by the electorate to run again.
“This one is what I don’t like. Nobody wants anybody. Please, don’t tell me that. Excuse me. You can go and tell that to the market people or children. Two years that people say he should come out.
