The Nigeria Police Council (NP’) on Monday approved the appointment of the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, as substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Disu, until last week, was the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) in charge of Force CID Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, before being named Acting IG upon the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as IGP.

The Nigeria Police Council, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, unanimously approved the appointment of Disu as the 23rd IGP.

The well-attended meeting, took place at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, and lasted less than 30 minutes before the decision was reached.

The approval is in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the council to consider any appointment of an IGP by the president.

The Police Council, chaired by the president, comprises the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the IGP.

Monday’s Council meeting was sequel to last week’s resignation of former IGP, Egbetokun.

In attendance at the meeting were Vice-President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack.

Also present at the meeting were the Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman; Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State; Dapo Abiodun of Ogun; Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa; Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau; Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo; and Peter Mba of Enugu.

The deputy governors of Kogi and Delta States, alongside the Ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, Police Affairs and Interior were also present.

Disu, 59, has been serving in an acting capacity since last Wednesday following Egbetokun’s departure.
