Mbappe rewrites World Cup history, surpasses Messi to become FIFA World Cup all-time leading goalscorer

France captain Kylian Mbappe has cemented his place among football’s immortals after becoming the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, overtaking Argentina legend Lionel Messi during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although France narrowly missed out on a podium finish after a thrilling 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff, Mbappe’s individual brilliance ensured his name was permanently etched into the history books.

The Real Madrid forward finished the tournament with 22 career World Cup goals, moving ahead of Messi’s tally of 21 goals and setting a new all-time record in the competition’s 96-year history.

The achievement crowns another remarkable World Cup campaign for the 27-year-old, who also claimed the Golden Boot as the tournament’s leading scorer after finding the net 10 times.

New king of World Cup goals

For years, the race to become the World Cup’s greatest goalscorer has featured some of football’s most celebrated names.

Germany legend Miroslav Klose held the record with 16 goals after surpassing Brazilian icon Ronaldo Nazario’s tally of 15 during the 2014 World Cup.

Before them, Gerd Müller of West Germany had set the standard with 14 goals, while France’s Just Fontaine became famous for scoring 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup—a record that still stands as the highest number of goals scored in a single edition of the tournament.

Mbappe has now eclipsed every one of those legendary figures.

The updated all-time World Cup scoring chart now reads:

Kylian Mbappe (France) – 22 goals
Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 21 goals
Miroslav Klose (Germany) – 16 goals
Ronaldo Nazario (Brazil) – 15 goals
Gerd Müller (West Germany) – 14 goals
Just Fontaine (France) – 13 goals
The feat underlines Mbappe’s extraordinary consistency on football’s biggest stage and reinforces his reputation as one of the finest players of his generation.

Golden Boot crowns outstanding tournament

Mbappe’s historic milestone came at the end of another exceptional World Cup campaign.

The French captain finished as the tournament’s highest scorer with 10 goals, becoming the first player since Gerd Müller in 1970 to reach double figures in a single World Cup.

Only Just Fontaine (13 goals in 1958) and Sándor Kocsis of Hungary (11 goals in 1954) have scored more goals in a single World Cup tournament.

Throughout the competition, Mbappe tormented defenders with his blistering pace, intelligent movement and clinical finishing, leading France’s attack from the group stage to the knockout rounds.

His performances once again highlighted why he is widely regarded as one of the world’s most complete forwards.

From teenage sensation to football icon

Mbappe’s World Cup journey began in spectacular fashion at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

As a teenager, he announced himself to the world by scoring four goals and helping France lift the World Cup for the second time in the country’s history.

He followed that performance with another outstanding campaign at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he claimed the Golden Boot after scoring eight goals, including a memorable hat trick in the dramatic final against Argentina.

Although France lost that final on penalties, Mbappe’s reputation as a player for the biggest occasions was firmly established.

At the 2026 World Cup, he elevated his legacy even further.

His 10-goal haul not only earned him another Golden Boot but also propelled him beyond Messi to become the most prolific scorer the World Cup has ever witnessed.

Team disappointment amid personal glory

Despite his historic achievement, Mbappe’s overriding emotion was one of disappointment after France failed to win a medal.

Les Bleus suffered a semi-final defeat to Spain before losing an entertaining third-place playoff against England.

Speaking after the match, the France captain admitted he would gladly exchange his personal records for another opportunity to compete for the World Cup title.

His reaction reflected the competitive mentality that has defined his career, with collective success remaining his primary motivation despite the numerous individual honours he has accumulated.

Legacy continues to grow

At just 27 years old, Mbappe still has time on his side and could feature at future editions of the FIFA World Cup.

His latest record further strengthens an already glittering career that includes a World Cup title, multiple Golden Boots, domestic league honours and individual awards.

Having now surpassed Messi, Klose, Ronaldo Nazario, Gerd Müller and Fontaine, Mbappe has established himself as the benchmark for World Cup goalscoring excellence.

While football’s greatest players are often remembered for defining moments, Mbappe has built a legacy through remarkable consistency over multiple tournaments.

His record-breaking exploits at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ensure that, regardless of future achievements, his name will forever occupy the summit of the sport’s greatest goalscorers on the biggest stage of them all
