The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a nationwide enforcement operation against vehicles operating without registration plates or with concealed, altered, or defaced number plates.

The directive was issued on Tuesday during the monthly strategic conference with senior police officers at the Goodluck Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre in Abuja.

Disu said the enforcement drive is part of efforts to strengthen security and curb criminal activities, warning that motorists violating vehicle registration laws will face sanctions.

The police chief also announced the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones beginning June 15.

According to him, the move is aimed at improving supervision, operational coordination, and accountability across police formations nationwide.

On the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, the IGP said security agencies are making progress in rescue efforts and remain fully committed to ensuring the victims’ safe return.

Providing an update on recent operations, Disu disclosed that police rescued 88 kidnapped victims and arrested 55 kidnapping suspects.

He added that 29 murder suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, eight terrorism suspects, and 42 cultism suspects were also arrested.

In a separate intelligence-led operation in Abuja, the Force arrested five suspected kidnappers allegedly planning attacks within the Federal Capital Territory.

To improve security coordination across state borders, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police to establish joint “Handshake Patrols” with neighbouring commands, alongside enhanced surveillance and intelligence sharing on major routes
