Huawei launches world’s first horizontal wide foldable phone, beating Apple and Samsung

Huawei has stepped into the next phase of foldable smartphone design with a new approach that moves away from the tall, narrow formats commonly seen in the category. The company has introduced a new foldable device called the Pura X Max, which brings a noticeably wider screen layout compared to existing models in the market.

Unlike conventional foldables that typically open into near-square tablet-like displays, Huawei’s new concept leans toward a broader, more horizontal form factor. Early visuals shared by the company on Chinese social media platform Weibo suggest a device that resembles a compact tablet, similar in feel to an iPad mini-style layout. This design direction sets it apart from current foldables, which usually prioritise height over width when unfolded.

Huawei has not yet confirmed the full technical specifications of the device, but official images show a short, wide folding form with a triple rear camera setup, minimal display crease, and multiple colour options including white, orange, and purple. The company is expected to reveal more details at an upcoming launch event, while pre-orders have already begun in China.

One of the key ideas behind this wider foldable technology is an improved viewing experience for media consumption. A broader display ratio can reduce black bars while watching videos, offering a more immersive visual experience. However, this design shift may also introduce trade-offs, including a bulkier feel and potentially less ergonomic one-handed use compared to slimmer foldables.

Huawei’s move comes as competition in the foldable segment continues to intensify. Other major smartphone players are also exploring similar form factors, with wider foldable concepts expected to enter the market in the coming months. Industry watchers believe brands are increasingly experimenting with new designs as the smartphone market matures and demand shifts toward premium, experience-driven devices.

Foldables have already evolved significantly since their early days, and Huawei has been one of the early adopters in this space, consistently expanding its lineup over the years. The latest Pura X Max further signals how manufacturers are now rethinking not just specifications, but the very shape and usability of smartphones in the next generation of devices
