Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, on Sunday received members of the reconciliation committee of the rainbow coalition at the government house in Port Harcourt.
The committee, which is backed by Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was led by Magnus Abe, chairman of the board of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
The rainbow coalition is a cross-party political alliance in Rivers state, spearheaded by Wike to unite politicians across party lines in support of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The reconciliation committee was established after Wike declared an end to the protracted political feud with Fubara.
The FCT minister, who served as governor of Rivers from 2015 to 2023, was widely reported to have played a pivotal role in Fubara’s emergence as his successor.
However, shortly after Fubara assumed office, the relationship between the two politicians deteriorated, precipitating a protracted political crisis that profoundly polarised Rivers’ political landscape.
The crisis saw lawmakers loyal to Wike initiate impeachment proceedings against Fubara on multiple occasions, escalating tensions in the state.
The dispute eventually culminated in President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a six-month state of emergency in Rivers.
Fubara would later defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), before stepping aside from the governorship race in favour of Kingsley Chinda, a member of the house of representatives and an ally of Wike.
