The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center has placed nine Northern states on red alert over possible flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.

The warning, contained in a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, cautioned that certain Northern states are likely to experience heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding.

The circular listed Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Borno among the states at risk, urging stakeholders to remain vigilant and report any emerging incidents.

“Certain northern settlements are likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period August 25 to 29, 2025,” the circular read. “We call on relevant stakeholders on the Centre’s platform to give feedback of any emerging situation in their various states.”

Adamawa and Katsina recorded the highest number of towns flagged. In Adamawa, Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo were listed, while in Katsina, Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa were placed on the watchlist.

Other vulnerable locations include Gwaram in Jigawa, Nafada in Gombe, Ngala in Borno, Sumaila in Kano, Anka in Zamfara, and Makira in Sokoto. Bokani also revealed that Bauchi State has two major towns, Azare and Jama’are, under close watch.

The Center had raised similar alerts across seven northern states, warning communities along the flood plains of the River Niger to evacuate due to rising water levels.
