The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has confirmed an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline, triggering emergency response efforts across affected communities in Delta State.

The incident, which occurred on December 10, 2025, was reported around 17:50 hours near Tebijor, Okpele and Ikpopo communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom.

In an official statement, the company said, “NNPC Limited confirms an incident involving an explosion reported at about 17:50 hours on 10th December 2025 near Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpopo communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State.”

The statement was signed by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd., Abuja, on Thursday.

Preliminary checks by the national oil company indicated a disturbance in pressure levels around the affected gas line.

“Initial observations indicate a pressure drop consistent with a loss of containment on an NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) pipeline,” the statement said.

NNPC explained that the exact cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, stressing that investigations were ongoing.

“The cause of the explosion is still unknown but would be confirmed after a detailed investigation has been concluded. Our priority at this time is the safety of nearby communities and the protection of the environment.”

The company added that emergency protocols had been activated to manage the situation and limit further risks.

It stated, “Emergency response procedures have been activated, and we are working closely with relevant authorities and community leaders to ensure a coordinated approach to mitigate impact.”

Reassuring the public of its adherence to safety rules, NNPC noted, “NNPC Limited remains committed to the highest safety and environmental standards.”

It also promised to release additional details as verified information becomes available.
