Dino Melaye makes ‘first court appearance’ as lawyer

Former senator and politician Dino Melaye on Friday appeared in court for the first time as a practicing lawyer, marking his formal entry into the legal profession after years in public service.

Melaye, who recently qualified as a lawyer, donned the full courtroom attire of wig and gown as he appeared before Justice Emeka Nwite at Court 8 of the Federal High Court in Abuja. His appearance follows his recent call to the Nigerian Bar earlier this month, after completing his law degree at Baze University.

“Senator Dino Melaye at the Federal High Court Abuja today. Appeared before Justice Emeka Nwite of Court 8,” he posted on his verified Facebook page, sharing a photo from the courtroom.

Melaye was among more than 5,000 candidates formally called to the Bar in a ceremony held in Abuja in early July, presided over by the Body of Benchers and the Nigerian Law School.

Known for his political activism and flamboyant public persona, Melaye represented Kogi West Senatorial District during the 8th National Assembly. Before then, he served as a member of the House of Representatives and later became a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His courtroom debut represents a shift in focus from politics to legal advocacy. The former lawmaker’s legal career begins at a time when several former politicians and public figures in Nigeria are exploring new professional paths outside elected office.
