ASUU give FG 4-day deadline to commence implementation of newly approved salary structure for lecturers

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to begin implementing the newly approved salary structure for university lecturers.

ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, announced this on Thursday during a public lecture at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, Bauchi.

He said the union expects immediate commencement of payment under the revised structure, which was agreed upon after lengthy negotiations.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna warned.

He explained that the demand is part of ASUU’s wider push to improve staff welfare and address persistent concerns over poor remuneration, which he said has fuelled brain drain and weakened the quality of Nigeria’s university system.

Piwuna also criticised the government’s history of delayed or partial implementation of past agreements, a situation that has repeatedly triggered industrial disputes.

The fresh ultimatum has raised concerns that another nationwide strike may be looming if the government fails to act within the given timeframe.

ASUU has frequently resorted to prolonged strikes to press home its demands, often disrupting academic calendars and affecting millions of students across public universities
