A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, his wife, Mrs Asabe Bashir, and their son, Mr Abdulaziz Malami.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted each of the defendants bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties

As part of the bail conditions, the court ordered that one of the sureties must deposit title deeds of properties located in either Maitama or Asokoro, both highbrow districts of Abuja.

The court also directed the defendants to deposit their international passports with the court, and pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, the defendants are to remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Justice Abdulmalik subsequently adjourned the matter until March 16 for the commencement of the trial.

Recently, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, took over the prosecution of his immediate predecessor, Mr Abubakar Malami, in this case, where he is facing terrorism and illegal firearms possession charges brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The embattled former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) is accused of knowingly abetting terrorism financing, while alongside his son, they are charged in counts two to five, with unlawful, possession of a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 Redstar AAA 5720 live rounds of cartridges and 27 expended Redstar AAA 5’20 cartridges, contrary to and punishable under relevant Sections of Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and Firearms Act, 2004.

This marks the second bail that the ex-AGF has been granted after Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted the three accused persons bail in the sum of N500 million with two sureties in January in a case that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleged a 16-count money laundering offence
