The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday held a valedictory session for Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo who represented Edo Central.

Senator Okpebholo was a member of the 10th Senate (2023+2024) until his election as Governor in September 2024.

He was victorious at the poll after winning 11 of the 18 local government areas of Edo state.

Speaking at the valedictory session, the Senator representing Edo North, former governor Adams Oshiomhole, described Okpebholo as a humble, resourceful, committed and intelligent man.

“We’re happy that in 30 days, Edo people are aware that there is a new governor in town: humble, resourceful, committed, intelligent, few words but maximum action,” he said.

In his contribution, Senator Danjuma Goje, (APC -Gombe), decried Governor Okpebholo as a man of good character, honest and committed person.

Senator Goje advised the new Edo State Governor to continue with his good character, which he believes would be useful for him as he leads the people of the state.

“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, I never knew his excellency, Monday until after the 2023 election when we were about to choose the leadership of the Senate. Since then till date, I give high respect for him. His sincerity, his honesty and commitment, are worth emulating” he said.

In his vote of thanks, Governor Okpebholo said his involvements in the legislative session has helped him to drive his passion for good governance, especially in infrastructure development, security education, health and so on.

The Governor, who described the plenary session as an emotional one for him also expressed his gratitude to his colleagues, especially those who stood by him during his campaign period.

“Distinguished colleagues, this is quite emotional for me. From the moment I joined the 10th Senate in June, 2023, every moment at the red chamber has remained especially memorable. We saw ourselves as forerunners of democracy and we wanted the best for the nation. Thank you for standing by me through out the campaign exercise” he said.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio urged Governor Okpebholo to keep his legacy of good works as he carries out his duties in Edo state.

Akpabio also officially declared the Edo Central Senatorial seat vacant, directing the Independent National Electoral Commissioner, INEC to organise a new election to fill the vacant seat.

The declaration was made after the valedictory session for Governor Okpebholo in the Senate chamber
