Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State, has recounted his recent encounter with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Reports indicated that the agency detained him in Abuja over allegations of a fraudulent cash withdrawal amounting to N189 billion.
Speaking to his supporters on Thursday, the 14th of August, 2025, after returning to Sokoto, Tambuwal explained that he had been invited by the EFCC and went to their office voluntarily on on the 6th of August.
He stated that after initial questioning, he was allowed to leave but was directed to return on August 10 and 11 for further interrogation
According to him, during the second visit, his legal team requested that he be released after hours of questioning, but EFCC officials insisted on two sureties.
Tambuwal said the agency demanded that the sureties must be directors in the Federal Civil Service with letters of introduction from their employers.
“I told them to go back and tell the chairman of the EFCC that I am a former Speaker of the House of Representatives with an unblemished record, a two-term Governor of Sokoto State, a serving Senator, and a Commander of the Order of the Niger. I should be allowed to go on self-recognition,” he said.
He lamented that despite these appeals, the EFCC refused to adjust the bail conditions, opting to keep him in custody until the following day when the conditions were met.
Tambuwal, who described his detention as politically motivated, vowed to remain resolute.
“I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be blackmailed. No one can tarnish my records.
In Nigeria today, there are two lines: those with Bola Tinubu and his government, and those with the people of Nigeria. We chose to stand with the people,” he declared
