Amid growing insecurity and recent political instability in the region, members of the ECOWAS Parliament have called for a unified and strategic approach to tackle the challenges confronting the West African subregion.
They made the call during the opening of the First Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja.
The lawmakers emphasized the importance of regional security cooperation, political stability, and economic integration, even in the wake of the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the regional bloc.
In an address, Speaker of the Parliament, Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima, urged participants to reflect critically on ECOWAS’s past achievements and current challenges.
She called for actionable recommendations to overcome obstacles to regional integration, security, and the free movement of people and goods.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray announced the resolution of the political crisis in Liberia.
He emphasized the importance of political will in inovercoming instability across member nations.Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, urged ECOWAS lawmakers to use the session to renew their commitment to the vision of a united and prosperous Africa, undeterred by internal challenges
.Several parliamentarians reaffirmed that the exit of three member countries must not derail ECOWAS’s mission. Instead, they stressed the need for collective resolve, coordination, and unity to restore stability and uphold democratic values in the region
