United States President, Donald Trump, has stopped Temporary Protected Status, TPS, for nationals of Cameroon, Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan living in the US.
The development was disclosed in updated information on the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS, website.
According to the USCIS, the move is part of a wider rollback of the humanitarian immigration programme.
The Service also stated that the development means eligible nationals from the four African countries who relied on TPS to remain and work legally in the US could lose those protections if they do not have another lawful immigration status.
TPS is a temporary humanitarian programme that allows eligible nationals of designated countries to remain in the US when conditions such as armed conflict, natural disasters or other extraordinary circumstances make it unsafe for them to return home. It does not provide permanent residency or a pathway to US citizenship.
USCIS said the decision followed determinations by former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem that the countries no longer met the statutory condition for TPS.
“After reviewing country conditions and consulting with the appropriate U.S. government agencies, former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem determined that Somalia no longer met the conditions for its designation for Temporary Protected Status, TPS,” the USCIS stated.
According to the agency, the termination of the four countries’ TPS status is effective August 14, 2026
