The federal government has approved the dualisation of the Bodo-Bonny Road to link the East-West Road.

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed this to journalists during a tour of projects in the South-South at the weekend, stating that President Bola Tinubu had directed that the road from the Bodo axis be expanded to connect with the East-West Road, a major transport artery in the region.

Umahi further revealed that the president had also approved the installation of solar lights and tree planting along both sides of the 37.9-kilometre road linking Bonny Island to the mainland as part of beautification efforts.

He added that the dualisation would be executed using concrete and is expected to be completed within eight months.

At the Akpajo Bridge section of the East-West Road dualisation, Umahi expressed satisfaction with the progress of work but urged the public to play an active role in protecting the infrastructure. He frowned at the movement of heavy trucks on completed sections of the road, warning that such actions could compromise its durability.

During a visit to the Aba–Port Harcourt Expressway, the minister commended GRB Construction for the rehabilitation and expansion work spanning from the Aba axis to the Imo River bridge boundary with Rivers State.

Also speaking, the Federal Controller of Works in Rivers State, Tarilade Ewereama, confirmed that repairs on failed portions of the road had been completed.

“All works are up to standard, and the contractor is meeting milestones. The project will be completed before the end of the year,” she said.

The Project Manager of GRB Construction also noted that the rehabilitation and expansion had extended the lifespan of the road, with improved drainage systems put in place to handle heavy traffic.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), Chioma Nweze, lauded the administration for the project, describing it as a step towards giving the region a stronger sense of inclusion.

She urged residents of both the South-East and South-South to support the administration in delivering more dividends of democracy
