President Bola Tinubu has nominated Lamido Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), pending confirmation by the Senate.

The nomination, announced on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, was made in accordance with Section 8(1) of the CBN Act, 2007.

According to the statement, Yuguda’s appointment follows the elevation of the former Deputy Governor, Bala Bello, who was recently named Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.

“President Tinubu expects the appointee to bring renewed dedication, professionalism, and commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability and growth,” Onanuga stated.

Yuguda, a seasoned economist and financial expert, previously served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 2020 to 2024. An alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, he graduated in 1983 with a B.Sc. in Accountancy and later earned a master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 1991.

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a CFA charterholder, Yuguda began his career at the CBN in 1984 as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department. He later served as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) between 1997 and 2001 before returning to the CBN, where he eventually became Director of the Reserve Management Department until his retirement in 2016.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the president’s confidence in Yuguda’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to the Central Bank’s leadership and to Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms
