President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of about 100,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion kits across Nigeria as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.
Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), Ismaeel Ahmed, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing State House correspondents after a meeting with President Tinubu at the presidential villa in Abuja.
Ahmed said the President issued a direct mandate for the rapid rollout of the kits to accelerate the conversion of vehicles and tricycles to run on gas, making transportation more affordable for Nigerians.
The directive comes against the backdrop of rising global fuel prices linked to tensions and conflict in the Middle East, including the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict, which has disrupted energy markets.
“The President has given a direct mandate that we should immediately deploy about 100,000 kits. We are working with many other stakeholders to incentivise the rollout and quickly get the kits into the market so that many vehicles and tricycles can be converted for people to access gas,” Ahmed said.
He added that the President also directed the initiative to fast-track the development of infrastructure for gas refuelling and electric mobility charging stations across the country, particularly along the Northern corridor.
Ahmed explained that refuelling infrastructure is already expanding, with about 77 stations at different stages of development. In Kano, he noted, two Liquefied CNG (LCNG) stations and several “daughter stations” are currently underway.
He said the expansion will cover major transport corridors from Lokoja through Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria and Kano to Maiduguri, with multiple refuelling units planned along the routes
