The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched 10 electric shuttle buses and 20 electric saloon cars into airport operations to support International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

According to the Chairman, FAAN,  Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje during the official launch in Abuja on Thursday said these vehicles will support airside and landside logistics, staff movement, and services, strengthening passenger coordination and efficiency across the airport.

He said by embracing electric mobility, FAAN is positioning Nigerian airports to remain competitive, responsible and future-ready.

He said the electric vehicles offer clear operational and environmental benefits adding that they are cleaner, quieter and more energy-efficient, significantly reducing carbon emissions and helping FAAN minimise its ecological footprint.

Also, Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku explained that they have secured approval to deploy 100 Electric Vehicles (EVs) to operate as airport shuttles at both Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

“We begin this journey with the first phase: the launch of these 10 state-of-the-art electric shuttle buses.

” They represent more than just transport; they symbolise cleaner air, quieter terminals, and a commitment to pioneering sustainable infrastructure in Nigerian aviation. This partnership is a testament to what is possible when the public and private sectors align with a shared vision.

Also, the Head of Fleet Operations for Possible EVS, Abimbola GyerNow, we’ve partnered with NEV Electric, explained that the manufacturer of the electric buses, and then we’ll begin operations moving passengers from the airport to the city center, one stop, one location.

Also, CEO, NEO Electric, Mosope Olaosebikan said FAAN is doing what only leadin aviation economies are doing-modernising airport access through sustainable, low-carbon mass transit
