An aircraft carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members on Friday made an emergency landing at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following a technical fault while in flight.

The incident was confirmed in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

According to the statement, the aircraft developed a technical problem while airborne within Nigerian airspace, prompting the crew to declare an emergency and request an immediate landing. LASEMA said it received a distress alert via its 767/112 toll-free emergency lines, after which its Lagos Response Team (LRT) was swiftly deployed to the airport.

“Upon arrival at the incident scene, the response team discovered that the passenger aircraft was in distress,” the statement said.

The pilot successfully executed a safe emergency landing on the runway at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, with LASEMA personnel and other emergency responders positioned on high alert throughout the operation.

The statement noted that a coordinated, multi-agency response was immediately activated. After preliminary safety checks by the pilot and engineering crew, the aircraft was moved to the apron for detailed inspection and necessary repairs.

“All passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft. No injuries were recorded and no lives were lost,” LASEMA confirmed.

Despite the technical malfunction and emergency landing, the agency said there was no significant damage to the aircraft. It added that the aircraft has since been secured at the apron and that all recovery operations have been successfully completed.

LASEMA commended the professionalism of the flight crew and the effective collaboration among emergency agencies, assuring the public of its continued readiness to respond promptly to emergencies across the state
