Ijaw Youth Council condemns impeachment moves against Fubara, demands sack of Wike

The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, has condemned the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the Rivers State House of Assembly, demanding the removal of Nyesom Wike from his position as FCT Minister.

IYC President, Alaye Theophilus announced this during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday, hours after lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The Ijaw group described the move as entirely contrary to the wishes of the people of Rivers State.

It urged President Bola Tinubu to sack FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of instigating unrest in the oil-rich state.

“Recent events in Rivers State have revealed the true enemies of the state. We therefore call for the immediate removal of the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike,” the group stated, adding that Wike is “not a true democrat but an enemy of democracy and good governance.”

The council also expressed support for Governor Fubara’s re-election bid and praised President Tinubu for his efforts to reposition Nigeria.

“The IYC, along with the entire Ijaw ethnic nationality, stands firmly behind the re-election bids of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 and Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his second term in Rivers State,” Theophilus said.

Vardiafrica earlier reported that the Rivers State House of Assembly formally began impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Odu, both members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday.

The lawmakers had accused the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct, with Speaker Martins Amaewhule stating that the notice of allegations would be served to the governor within seven days
