Enugu State Launches First State-Owned Airline, Aiming to Make State a National Aviation Hub

Enugu State’s much-anticipated airline, Enugu Air, is set to officially launch operations on Monday, July 7, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ambitious push to become a major force in Nigeria’s aviation industry.

The launch ceremony will be held at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, expected to attend alongside other top government officials and dignitaries. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the airline’s management ahead of the event.

According to Enugu State’s Commissioner for Transportation Obi Ozor, Enugu Air is a critical part of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s vision for a modern, integrated transportation network that can drive economic growth and regional connectivity.

The airline will begin service with a fleet of three Embraer jets from the E170 and E190 series selected for their fuel efficiency, reliability, and comfort on short to medium-haul routes.

Initial operations will follow a triangular route connecting Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos, with plans to expand to other major cities such as Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, and Kano. International destinations are also on the radar as part of the airline’s long-term expansion goals.

“With a strong foundation built on innovation and sustainability, Enugu Air is poised to transform regional air travel, boost state pride, and raise Enugu’s profile nationally and globally,” Ozor said.

Industry watchers say the launch could reshape regional aviation in Nigeria by offering passengers more options and boosting competition on high-traffic domestic routes. The initiative is also expected to create jobs, stimulate tourism, and enhance Enugu’s standing as a strategic logistics and business hub.

With a modern fleet, customer-focused approach, and strategic route network, Enugu Air is positioning itself as more than just a state-owned carrier—it aims to be a catalyst for broader economic transformation in the Southeast and beyond
