In a symbolic gesture, President Tinubu conferred national honours on several fallen and living icons of Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, asserting that their sacrifices “weaved the culture of democracy into the very fabric of our nation.”

“As we mark a twenty-sixth year of unbroken democracy, it is right to honour those who have made sacrifices in the past, braving all the odds and the guns to ensure we have a regime of democracy in our country,” President Tinubu declared.

The highlight of the ceremony was the conferment of national honours on dozens of distinguished Nigerians, many of whom paid the ultimate price for the freedom the nation now enjoys. Among the posthumous awardees:

Alhaja Kudirat Abiola (CFR), honoured for her fearless activism during the dark days of military rule.

Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (GCFR), the late general and democracy advocate.

Prof. Humphrey Nwosu (CON), acclaimed for his role in conducting the historic June 12, 1993, election.

Ken Saro-Wiwa (CON) and the Ogoni Nine, who were posthumously granted full pardons and national honours for their activism and unjust execution.

Other posthumous recipients include notable figures such as Chief Gani Fawehinmi (GCON), Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti (CON), and Chima Ubani (OON).

Among the living, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka (GCON) was celebrated for his enduring commitment to justice and democracy. Esteemed journalists and civil rights defenders, including Prof. Olatunji Dare (CON), Kunle Ajibade (OON), Dapo Olorunyomi (OON), and Bayo Onanuga (CON), were also decorated for their courage in telling the truth when it mattered most.

Veteran publisher Uncle Sam Amuka Pemu (CON), turning 90 tomorrow, was specially honoured for his unwavering dedication to the media profession

The President also recognized several pro-democracy activists and political figures such as Senator Shehu Sani (CON), Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah (CON), and Barrister Femi Falana, SAN (CON), who have shaped Nigeria’s political conscience for decades.

To underscore the unity between the executive and legislative arms, President Tinubu decorated the presiding officers of the National Assembly with their previously conferred honours:
