The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced the enforcement of the mandatory minimum Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance.

This is in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. The enforcement began on February 1, 2025.

In a statement on Sunday, Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command in Abuja, stated that all vehicle owners in the FCT must now possess a valid Third-Party Insurance policy before driving on public roads.

She advised those without any form of insurance to obtain one immediately to avoid penalties.

According to the police, Third-Party Insurance is designed to protect road users from financial losses due to accidents, covering damages caused to another person’s vehicle, property, or bodily injury.

They noted that the policy will ensure that accident victims receive necessary compensation and reduce the financial burden on vehicle owners.

In the statement, FCT Police Command issued a strong warning against non-compliance, stating that violations will lead to strict enforcement measures.

“The enforcement is part of efforts to ensure adherence to road safety regulations and protect all road users,” the command stated.

Meanwhile, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed officers handling the enforcement to be professional, the statement said.

“No form of harassment or extortion of motorists would be tolerated,” he emphasised.

He urged the public to cooperate with the police, noting that “this enforcement exercise is aimed at ensuring the safety and security of all road users in the FCT.”

Authorities have assured that officers will be “courteous and firm in the discharge of their duties.”

The police also noted that the directive aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

Motorists are encouraged to comply immediately to avoid facing penalties. The police have reiterated that the enforcement will be continuous and sustained.
