Protesters have besieged the Independent National Electoral Commission office in Edo State.
The protesters are alleging that the election results released so far by the electoral body have been tampered with and do not reflect the true wishes of the people.
“We came out en masse to vote Asue Ighodalo but the Independent National Electoral Commission is trying to subvert the will of the people,” a protester said.
“The INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal went down immediately they started announcing this result. Go and check the figures that are there and the figures that are being announced. INEC is pushing Nigerians to the wall and it is not good to push people to the wall. Go and check the IREV and see what’s going on,” another angry PDP supporter stated.
The governorship election has been marred by contentious issues, with the PDP levying serious allegations of electoral malfeasance and voter intimidation through the misuse of security agencies.
Furthermore, the PDP has disputed the announced results, claiming they do not accurately represent the true will of the electorate.
As of the latest update, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, holds the lead based on results from 16 local governments.
INEC is set to resume result collation at 5 pm.
