The Federal Government will reconvened its meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, on September 6, to allow for more time to address the issues raised by the Union.

The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman stated this in Abuja at the end of a closed door meeting with ASUU.

Professor Mamman said that a sub-committee had been set up to review their demands while also finding lasting solutions to the union’s demands.

The ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed optimism that by the next meeting, all the issues would be resolved.

“We have met to discuss all the issues and review them. We have given government between now and the next meeting to see what they have done”. he noted.

“We believe in the interest of the Nigerian child and to protect their interest if the issues were resolved,” he said.

Some of the demands include the need for University autonomy, discrepancies in the released list of the reconstituted governing Councils of Universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, payment of all the backlog of Earned Academic Allowance and outstanding salaries.

Others are deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

In June 2024, the federal government commenced dialogue with ASUU, to avert the planned strike.

Few days ago, the University lecturers had threatened to down tools over the alleged Federal Government’s failure to meet its demands.

Prof Mamman had expressed Federal Government’s desire to uplift the standards of education and ensure that students remain on campus.
