Supreme Court confirms Umahi as APC senatorial candidate in Ebonyi South

The Supreme Court has affirmed Governor Dave Umahi, as the authentic Senatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Ebonyi South District.

In a ruling on Friday, a five-man panel of the apex court, led by Justice M. O Kekere-Ekun, dismissed an appeal filed by Princess Ann Agom-Eze, against the ticket of Umahi, as APC Senatorial Candidate for Ebonyi South in the 2023 election.

Recall that Mrs Agom-Eze emerged second in the senatorial primary of the APC that was won by Austin Umahi, Governor Umahi’s younger brother, on May 28, 2022.

The governor had contested the APC presidential primary in Abuja, but lost to Bola Ahmed Tinubu..

Following the withdrawal of Austin Umahi from the senatorial race, a court ordered a fresh primary election, which was eventually won by Governor Umahi.

Agom-Eze had challenged Umahi’s emergence as the APC candidate for the senatorial district after his victory in a fresh primary election conducted on July 30.

Umahi emerged winner of the primary, polling 268 of the 275 votes cast.

However, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on September 30, affirmed Umahi’s ticket.

Agom-Eze, in disagreement, approached the apex court to challenge the ruling of the appellate court.

In a Judgement on Friday, the Supreme Court agreed with the appellate court’s decision and affirmed Governor Umahi as authentic candidate of the APC for Ebonyi South Senatorial district.
